Evaluating the Gaps in Employment Programs for Survivors of Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery

Promoting the economic security of survivors of human trafficking and modern-day slavery is a powerful way to equip and empower survivor leaders. Economic justice intersects with all survivor identities and needs, and employment programs for survivors are a key part of that justice.

Meeting survivor employment needs is more critical than ever. This report, built from the ground up by survivor leaders, details the existing gaps in global survivor employment programs and provides calls to action for organizations, funders, allies, and those working in policy.

Empowering Survivor-Led Advocacy: Bridging the Gap

A Policy Advocacy Working Group (PAWG) Report

Survivor leaders and survivor-led organizations bring invaluable insights and perspectives that are crucial for the development of impactful policies and programs in the antislavery movement. However, despite their expertise and commitment, these leaders often face significant barriers in accessing resources, which limits their ability to engage in impactful and sustainable advocacy to drive meaningful change. In order to address these barriers, the Survivor Alliance established a dedicated Policy Advocacy Working Group (PAWG) aimed at fostering practices that provide more equitable access to resources for survivor-led advocacy. PAWG members brought collective efforts, lived experiences and expertise from six different countries around the world. The Working Group aimed to explore best practices, develop innovative strategies, and advocate for more equitable funding mechanisms.

Action Plan For Survivor Leadership in the Next Decade

This groundbreaking plan is the culmination of the collective efforts of over 300 survivor leaders, united by a shared mission to place survivor leadership at the forefront of the anti-human trafficking movement in practical terms and chart a course to bring this vision to life.

Our collective findings reveal that decisions, policies, service models, advocacy efforts, and pay structures have largely been crafted by individuals who don't share our lived experiences. The release of the ACTION PLAN is a catalyst for transformation, inspiring changes in policy and practice. It's a call to action to place survivors at the forefront of the anti-trafficking and anti-slavery movement. The Action Plan outlines our vision for making this a reality within the next decade.

World Congress
2021 Report

The 2021 Survivor Alliance World Congress marked a pivotal moment for survivor leadership in the international fight against modern-day slavery and human trafficking. For the first time, survivor leaders outnumbered our allied colleagues as planning committee members, speakers, and participants at an anti-trafficking conference. Survivor leaders included adults over 18, people of all genders, and survivors of any type of human trafficking or slavery.

This report details how the Congress planned to achieve these objectives, analyzes the discussions held during the Congress within the broader context of the international anti-trafficking community, shares key lessons learned, and maps out Survivor Alliance’s plan for maintaining the momentum of change generated by this catalyzing event.

The document was initially published & shared with allies, anti-trafficking organisations & the Home Office in the hope that sharing these experiences would positively inform changes in UK anti-trafficking & anti-slavery policies & service provision.
