Welcome to Nairobi

We are excited to welcome you to the 2024 World Congress in Nairobi, Kenya! Below you'll find essential travel information to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. We recommend you thoroughly review this page prior to travel to better prepare you for the trip.

About Nairobi

  • Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya. Nairobi is famous for having The Nairobi National Park, the world’s only game reserve found within a major city. The place name "Nairobi" comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nairobi, which translates to "cool water".

  • The phrase is also the Maasai name of the Nairobi River, which in turn lent its name to the city. However, it is popularly known as the "Green City in the Sun", and is surrounded by several expanding villa suburbs.

Nairobi Population: 3.1 million

  • Kenya Population: around 44 million

  • Time Zone:  East Africa Time. The zone is three hours ahead of UTC (UTC+3)

  • Telephone Area Code: Kenya: 254, Nairobi: 20

Tips and Tricks:

  • Currency
The Kenyan Shilling is the currency of Kenya. The currency code for Shillings is KES, and the currency symbol is KSh. You can find Kenyan Shilling rate and currency converter here

  • Weather: Nairobi is situated in the Central Highlands of Kenya and enjoys a very nice climate for most of the year with temperatures averaging between 50 and 82 Fahrenheit (10 and 28 Celsius). There are two rainy seasons; the first is from March to the end of May and the second shorter season runs from October to the end of November. The average temperature in October is a high of 24 degrees Celsius and low of 10 degrees Celsius. Find current weather here

  • Clothing: Bring clothes that make you feel comfortable. We do not have a formal dress code for the event, so you may dress casually if you want. Some participants and staff may dress in business casual attire for their presentations.

Pack for the unpredictable weather of Kenya. It is not always hot and temperatures can drop at night, so it’s wise to take layers. Pack cool, breathable fabrics during the day but be aware that the hotel will have air conditioning turned on and you might get cold. The final night (October 4th) we will have a closing party. We encourage you to bring traditional clothes from your country to wear!
